About data recovery

You can sometimes encounter situations while working on QuickBooks that threaten your financial data. Your data can sometimes get damaged due to software issues, but external PC factors can be equally responsible for data loss. You’ll need to recover your data if it gets severely damaged or lost. Some conditions that are responsible for damaging your QB data are mentioned below-

  1. Overwriting or deletion by a user.

  2. Theft or physical damage to hard disk.

  3. Operating system corruption can also damage the data.

  4. Natural disasters including fires, earthquakes, and floods.

  5. Malware or a cyber attack can also damage the data.

Procedure

Intuit offers an Auto Data Recovery tool to help users gain access back to QB data. A simple of recovering your data can be restoring a recently created backup file. We have explained the steps to execute both methods below-

Using a Backup file

If you created a complete data backup recently, then it become easy to restore your data using the file as described below-

  • Open your QuickBooks and go to the Preferences menu.

  • Go to the Backup option and click Reveal Backup folder.

  • Double-click the backup folder and select the Date Modified filter to sort the files according to their creation date.

You can now use the most recent backup to restore your lost data. If you don’t have a backup file or it isn’t created recently, use the following steps to recover data using ADR files-

  • Close QuickBooks and create a new folder on the desktop named QB DATA.

  • Go to your QB folder and look for a transaction log (.tlg) file.

  • Right-click the file and Move it to the new folder (QB DATA) you created on the desktop.

  • Open the QB folder and search for the QuickBooksAutoDataRecovery folder inside it.

  • Move the company file with the .adr extension to the QB DATA folder on the desktop.

  • Right-click the .adr file and click Rename.

  • Erase .adr from the file and save it with its new name. This file will work as your company file in the software.

  • Go to the Utilities option in the QBDT File menu and use the verify-rebuild utility tool to ensure the data is not damaged.

  • If you find no issues after scanning the data, you can use this file as your company file in QuickBooks.
